Job Path is seeking a full time Residential Counselor who is motivated, flexible, bright, energetic, responsible, and organized.  The role of the Residential Counselor is to support people with a developmental disability in every way possible to facilitate personal growth and relationship building, as they emerge in their rightful place within the community.  Also, the Residential Counselor is responsible for supportive counseling and providing training in independent living skills to residents of the Supported Living Program.

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to) the following tasks:

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to physically intervene in a crisis situation as needed.
  • Must be able to handle simultaneous challenging situations in an often high stress environment.
  • Must have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with residents, personnel and support agencies.
  • Able to think objectively in various situations.
  • Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest and positive emphasis, as well as a calm environment.


  • Under direct supervision, assists in the implementation of the treatment plan for each resident, by completing monthly summary reports.
  • Responds to crisis situations and manages resident behaviors in accordance with the Behavioral Management Plan.
  • Assists in providing safe delivery of care to meet the goals and objectives of each individual’s plan of care.  Assists in guiding the development of acceptable habits and attitudes by consistently and fairly implementing the behavioral program, emphasizing good choices, and positive interactions.
  • Serve as a role model to the individual receiving services.
  • Ensures that the food provided or selected is appropriate for those on a special diet.
  • Provide support counseling and crisis intervention when appropriate.
  • Provide facilitation and constructive resolution of household disputes.
  • Create socialization experiences with individuals and with community.
  • Provide advocacy based on individual needs.
  • Assist in training new and relief staff.
  • Effectively practice person centered planning.
  • Assist people to meet personal and physical needs.
  • Effectively and respectfully communicate with person using person’s communication style.
  • Assist people to maintain a personalized and safe living environment.
  • Makes collateral contacts as needed to ensure coordination of care is provided.
  • Participates in Utilization Review.
  • Notifies the appropriate supervisory personnel of any medical, psychiatric, or programmatic emergency.
  • Conducts Apartment meetings with assigned staff as needed and requested by the Program manager and/or medical coordinator.
  • Attends staff meeting and other agency meetings as requested by the Program Manager.

Health & Safety; Respecting Individuals Personal Health Needs By:

  • Administering medication correctly
  • Being aware of and competent in dealing with individual medical needs eg. seizures, health concerns, allergies etc.
  • Attending regularly and consistently to personal care needs such as bathing, hygiene, grooming etc. in a dignifying and respectful matter
  • Accompanying individuals to doctors appointments
  • Reading and initialing the consult sheet and following through with the information given by the doctor
  • Ordering supplies in advance to ensure they arrive when needed eg. medication, gloves etc.

Qualifications: Bachelor Degree in Psychology or Social Work.  Good verbal and written skills, Knowledge of principles of psychology is useful.  Responding to the individual receiving support in a caring, mature manner, while maintaining professional boundaries necessary. Must consistently exhibit mental and emotional ability to understand and perform the essential functions of the job.

Salary: $31,000.00 annual, non-exempt
